Why is it called Jeet Kune Do?

March 7, 2018

Jeet Kune Do stands for Way of the Intercepting Fist or Foot. What would make Bruce Lee choose the concept of interception as the main title of his art over any of the other concepts he developed? One reason is that if you can intercept an attack you have a moment in time where you can employ a fight ending strategy. We teach this strategy to all of our students. It is interesting that I see any number of people promoting themselves as Jeet Kune Do practitioners or teachers but their workouts look like kickboxing. This is fine to a degree, but if you are never practicing interception you are not doing Jeet Kune Do, you are doing kickboxing or boxing. Kickboxing and boxing are sports with weight classes for a reason. The two practitioners stand in front of each other and bang away until someone drops, if you do this in a fight, the bigger stronger person will win every time regardless of your training. That is not our goal. Our goal is to take as little damage as possible by intercepting an attack and finishing the altercation in as nice or brutal of a fashion as the situation warrants. We also need to have the ability to neutralize an attack from someone who is bigger, stronger, and faster. If you want to learn how to do this yourself, try our weekly group classes at The Meraki Studios or if you are interested in learning privately you can take advantage of the best offer we've ever had on private lessons by going here: Private Lessons
